Breastfeeding through pregnancy

Grace Vinton is so impressive with her ability to continue to breastfeed through pregnancy TWICE! She told me about some of the challenges she faced during labor and delivery, even facing postpartum depression, but breastfeeding was just a natural continuation for her. She explains that you need to trust the process, trust your body, and don’t withhold the “magic milk” from your child as this is SUPER comforting to little ones.

“It’s not all about what you do or what the baby does. It’s about how you work together, it’s like a dance. And I wish that I knew that because sometimes I would get down on myself. Am I making enough milk? Is the baby eating enough? Is the baby eating productively enough? But what I really needed to do was just trust the process, trust our bodies.”

Always Have a Support System

Grace also mentions that having a support system around you during the highs and lows of breastfeeding was key to her success. She gives us some great recommendations on books she and her husband read to prepare them for delivery and breastfeeding. She also repeatedly mentioned that her husband was her biggest cheerleader and would encourage her when she thought things were getting too tough! Grace is a big proponent of preparation and education! BreastPrep is the perfect resource to get you well on your way to success, though we would be remiss if we didn’t encourage you to read books and join support groups in your area too!

Also, know that her birth story is not meant to frighten you, but instead to help you understand that everyone’s experience is different. Despite very difficult and scary labor experiences, Grace has a positive perspective and these experiences haven’t stopped her from having a third baby!

If you or someone you know is suffering from postpartum depression (1 in 7 will experience PPD) please seek the help of a medical professional or counselor. You may also call Postpartum Support International hotline: 1-800-944-4773.

Breastfeeding pointers

  • Get your husband involved before, during and after pregnancy.
  • Extended breastfeeding brings peace, comfort and security to babies and toddlers.
  • Don’t be afraid to let your child use you as a pacifier, this is a huge source of security and may help you regulate your milk.
  • Tandem nursing can be like “fireworks” as the siblings and mom all connect from released oxytocin.
  • Limit toddler feedings by singing ABCs to allow for longer newborn feedings.
  • Seek lactation consultant regardless of how experienced you might be!
  • Wear your baby in order to free up your hands to take care of other things.
  • Check out local support groups like your local La Leche League meet up.
